The pub’s name, ‘The Just Reproach’ has been taken from Daniel Defoe’s account of the Great Storm of 1703. Realising the enormity and impact of the Great Storm across the country, Defoe asked for the public to send accounts to him which he would then publish. There is uncertainty as to how many accounts Defoe received and how many he made up but accounts of Deal and its inhabitants were far from flattering! Obviously the town, and its people, have changed significantly in over 300 years!

We hope this will provide a flavour of our pub but please feel free to contact us by any of the means identified above should you require any further information.
Now into our third month we are still pleased to report that all is good. New customers still find their way to our door, helped by word of mouth or the reports in: The Sunday Times; Radio 4's 'You and Yours'; Meridian TV News; the Deal & Sandwich Express: the Spring issue of Channel Draught (Dover, Deal & Sandwich Camra newsletter) and The Deal Times. One ‘negative’ comment has found its way back to us and that is that we are not open for longer!
We have continued to provide a changing beer menu and have sourced from the Orkneys (802 miles away ) to Ripple (3 miles away) in an attempt to provide a diverse range, reflecting local ingredients and tradition as well as the brewer’s passion for his/her product. There are an ever increasing number of microbreweries and we hope to source from as many as we can over the coming months and years.
You can always follow us via the website, Facebook and Twitter to keep up to date with events and beers too.
If you have yet to find us we look forward to seeing you soon.
Mark & Bronwen Robson
The philosophy behind a micropub is the rejection of all that the big chains tell us that we want. There will, therefore, be no television, no fruit machines, no juke box, no food, no spirits and no lager. The emphasis will be on good beer from microbreweries (and house wines) and conversation. The beer will be served straight from the cask.
